Pajamboree!

Students and parents alike had a great time at our 2011 Pajamboree!  On this night, several LES staff members stayed late and opened the doors to families dressed for a bedtime story.  Parents read stories to their children... children read stories to their parents... and all had a great time!!  We feasted on cookies and hot chocolate, shared stories, and took AR quizzes.  What a great way to spend an evening.  Thanks to all the staff members and families who made 2011 Pajamboree a success!

Colonial Capers

On Friday, October 28, our fourth graders got to experience life as a colonial kid!  Dr. Annette Laing, author and performer, came to Liberty Elementary to show us how children lived during the 1750s.  In this picture, one student had the opportunity to use her manners and conversation skills during tea time.  As you can see, we all got a good giggle!  Sadly, we learned that most of us would not have been a rich colonial kid.  Instead, we would have had to work for our supper!  Thanks go to Dr. Laing for sharing this information with us in an entertaining manner.  We had a blast and we can't wait for you to come back next year!

Pop Open a Good Book!

Students, parents, and teachers don't forget that this year we once again have the Popcorn Reader's 100% Club!!  Students who make a 100% on their AR quizzes will have their name posted on the wall outside their classroom as seen above.  In addition, these students have the chance to win a free book!!  So... pop open a good book... keep on reading... and keep succeeding!!!

The Media Center: Your Ticket to Reading!!!

Welcome back for the 2011-2012 school year!

It's hard to believe that we have been in school for almost a month!  At this point, all classes have received their media center orientation and all students are ready to check out books.  Lately, students have been very busy taking STAR tests and checking out books on their level.  For the past week, second grade students have come in for a Response to Literature lesson with media specialist, Mrs. Craven.  Mrs. Craven read these students her favorite book, Saturdays and Teacakes by Lester Laminack led students in a discussion about how authors use their memories to write stories.  Then, the students wrote about their own memories of special people and times in their lives.  We all had a great time going down memory lane!!  Soon, third grade students will be joining us for animal research lessons.  I wonder how we can make this learning into a Media Festival project?? Let me know if you have a great idea!

Chad Crews: Magic Man!!

Create your own video slideshow at animoto.com.

On March 24, 2011 Chad Crews, the magical educator, came to entertain students who met all three of their AR goals.  Students were wowed and amused by his humor and antics.  What did students love best?  His escape from padlocks, chains, and a straightjacket.  Now that is magic!

And the winner is...

The votes are in... the ballots have been counted... and the Georgia Picture Book winner at Liberty Elementary is...The Cheese by Margie Palatini!!

Congratulations to all the classes who participated in this activity.  All year, classes have come to the media center to listen to Georgia Picture Book nominees.  Those classes who listened to ten or more nominees were eligible to vote for their favorite book on Read Across America Day.  The favorite at our school this year, hands down, was The Cheese.  "It was a funny book and we got to sing a song with it," states one first grade student.  If you haven't read this book, come check it out of the media center.  It is sure to be a favorite... our students say so!  We all can't wait to see which book wins for the whole state.
