Finding Peter!

This year we discovered that Peter, the little boy from Ezra Jack Keats The Snowy Day, was inspired by this picture of a little boy from Liberty County!  We are anxious to find out who the real Peter really was.  This short article was printed in the May 13, 1940 issue of Life magazine.  Mr. Keats saw this article, cut it out, posted it in his studio, and saved it for 22 years.  When he was creating the picture book The Snowy Day, he used this Liberty County resident as his inspiration.  At Liberty Elementary, we were delighted to make this discovery and now we want to find out more about this little boy!  If you have any information about the identity of this child, please contact Kristi Craven at the Liberty Elementary media center at (912) 884-5098.

Yesterday, WTOC came to Liberty Elementary to honor a Top Teacher.  We grabbed them and told them about our quest to find Peter from The Snowy Day.  Stay tuned folks!  Hopefully, the piece will air sometime in May!

And the investigation begins! Looking for Peter from The Snowy Day. Kindergarten and 5th grade students are excited to join in the search!! The inspiration for Peter was a Liberty County resident...and we want to find him! So glad to have Hermina Glass-Hill along as a partner in our quest!

        Children’s Book Week at Liberty Elementary  

November 13-17

Help us celebrate participating in the following activities:

Monday:  Favorite Author Day- Teachers and staff will share books by their favorite authors all throughout the day.

Tuesday:  Reading Train- Students and staff will form a Reading Train as they read together in the hallway for 20 minutes.

Wednesday: Book Buddy Day- Classes in the upper grades will pair up with classes in the younger grades and read with students.

Thursday:  Book Character Dress-up Day- Students and staff may dress up as their favorite book character.  Students who dress up must bring the book with the character in it to school with them on this day. 

Friday:   Families in School Day- As a part of this day, students will enjoy books read by parents and family members.

On Saturday, the Live Oak Public Library will hold their annual Savannah Children’s Book Festival in Forsyth Park.  Please visit their website at http://www.liveoakpl.org/scbf/ for more information and a list of visiting authors!

Save the Date!

Book Fair will be here next week, February 6-10!  Look for your student's letter to come home this week with their special shopping day and time.  This year we will have extended hours on Tuesday, February 7.  Parents may come shop with us until 5 p.m. on that day.  See you at the fair!

Children’s Book Week November 14-18 

 Help us celebrate participating in the following activities:

 Monday: Military Reader Day- Students will enjoy visits from military readers as these visitors read their favorite books to students.

 Tuesday: Students and staff will form a Reading Train as they read together in the hallway for 20 minutes.

Wednesday: Book Buddy Day- Students may bring a small stuffed animal to read with on this day. The stuffed animal must fit inside a closed book bag.

Thursday: Book Character Dress up Day- Students and staff may dress up as their favorite book character. Students who dress up must bring the book with the character in it to school with them on this day.

 Friday: Families in School Day- As a part of this day, students will enjoy books read by parents and family members.

                                        Children’s Book Week

                                              November 16-20

Help us celebrate participating in the following activities and challenges:

 

Book Challenge:  IF students read 6,000 books, Mr. Anderson and Dr. Faircloth will surprise students by participating in a secret challenge!

 

Monday:  Students and staff will form a Reading Train as they read together in the hallway for 20 minutes.

 

Tuesday:  I Love Books!  Students and teachers will share their favorite books with each other as students create “My Favorite Book” tags to wear on their ID lanyards.

 

Wednesday:  Guest Reader Day- Students will enjoy visits from military readers as visitors read their favorite books to students.

 

Thursday:  Book Character Dress up Day- Students and staff may dress up as their favorite book character.  Students who dress up must bring the book with the character in it to school with them on this day. 

 

Friday:   “Orange” you excited about reading? - Students and staff may wear as much orange as possible on this day in order to celebrate Unity Day and reading!  In the morning, instruction will continue as usual.  In the afternoon, students will return to their homeroom class to read and take AR quizzes for the remainder of the day.

Building Better Readers... Book by Book!

Welcome to the 2015-2016 school year!  We are busy getting the media center ready by processing new books, reading Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl titles, and preparing our iPads for checkout.  In addition, we are adding a new iPad/iRead spot to our library, so stay tuned for pictures and updates!  Parents, if you have a rising 4th grader or a new 5th grader that needs an Apple ID, please print this permission slip and bring it to the media center, if you have not done so already.  If you need a copy of the permission slip, we have them available!  Teachers, soon the media center handbook and a media lessons calendar will be available to you online.  Everything you need to know about using the LES Media Center will just be a mouse click away.  We are excited about the new school year as we "Build Better Readers... Book by Book!"

Snow Day!!!

Students who met all three of their AR goals had a wonderful time playing in the snow on January 16, 2015.  We are so proud of all of the 219 students who participated.  Way to go, LES cubs!

Snow is Coming to Midway!

Students, we are having a snow party!  That's right, snow is coming to Midway, GA.  Just make all three of your AR goals by noon on December 19.  The party will be on January 16.  Stay tuned for more information!

Book Challenge:  IF students read 6,000 books, Mr. Anderson and Dr. Faircloth will entertain students in a special assembly on Friday, November 21.

 

Monday:  Students and staff will form a Reading Train as they read together in the hallway for 20 minutes. In addition, students will create grade level stories using the Story Wheel  iPad App.

 

Tuesday:  Each grade level will meet for an assembly in the media center where grade level stories will be shared.

 

Wednesday:  Guest Reader Day- Students will enjoy visits from community members, staff, and BOE officials as visitors read their favorite books to students.

 

Thursday:  Pajama Day- Students and staff may wear school appropriate pajamas on this day. In the morning, instruction will continue as usual.  In the afternoon, students will return to their homeroom class to read and take AR quizzes for the remainder of the day.

 

Friday:   Book Character Dress up Day- Students and staff may dress up as their favorite book character.  Students who dress up must bring the book with the character in it to school with them on this day.  The Reading Challenge assembly will be held in the afternoon.

2013-2014 Exemplary Library Media Program

Once again, the Liberty Elementary media program has been honored for excellence! On June 10, 2014, the Libery Elementary media center received the 2013-2014 Liberty County School System Exemplary Library Media Program Award.  Pictured above is the plaque received at the Board of Education meeting.  We are so excited about this award and we wish to congratulate the other media centers across the county who were honored as well.  Way to go Midway Middle School, Bradwell Institute, and Taylors Creek Elementary!
